I've only read a couple of Newbigin books, and if this one is anything like those, you are right on the money. From what I can tell, his evangelical/postliberal blinders seem to prevent him from stepping outside his assumptions long enough to critique them. As a result, it his works it seems the grass is always darker on the other side of the fence, even if it is the same grass.

I'm a Canadian citizen who has been in the US for 5 years, and although it was my choice to work and live in the US, I'm so tired of the amount of fear mongering that's going on with respect to health care reform. I can't tell you how irked I get when I hear references to how poorly Canada's single-payer system works. And it is a single-payer system, NOT socialized medicine because the health care providers are private.

I realize that people's fears are exploited by those lobbying for the status quo, but the level of mis-information out there, and the willingness to jump on the Obamacare = Nazism train is ridiculous.

If Canada's system was so bad, and Canadians hated it so much, then why are the Canadian outcomes better than the US outcomes. Canadians have and average age of 80.5 years as opposed to US's 77, the US spends about 35% more on healthcare per person as a percentage of GDP.

Finally, if Canada's system was so bad, then why does it never come up as an issue during our elections? Not even our most conservative politicians want to change our single-payer system to look more like the US system.

That makes me SO DAMN MAD! I am sending this video...

Wow, I find Ryan's comment fascinating. Every time I broach this subject with anyone that is "anti-socialized medicine" which, is most everyone in my family, I always hear about how Canada's health care is horrible. No mind the the 36 industrialized nations that have nationalized (NOT SOCIALIZED) medicine that have better health care than we do. I guess that my big fear is that through the negotiations and trying to get everyone on board, the system being proposed will be cheapened to be less than what it was originally proposed as. And, I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly where all of that stands at this point.

There is no doubt that something needs to be done. Our family personally has stories about how the health care system has failed us numerous times. I am just praying that it ends up being the right thing..

I'm Canadian. We have our problems, such as a shortage of doctors and long waiting times, but all those problems were caused by massive neo-liberal spending cuts in the early 90's by the Liberal government under Jean Chretien.

The Canadian you see on TV complaining about Canadian healthcare is a complete mischaracterization of our system. http://is.gd/1ZHFY

I have never had a problem with Canadian healthcare, asides from a long wait time. The American system seems to me to be as anti-Christian as you can get. Lest we forget--the annointing of the sick and afflicted is a sacrament--and sacraments shouldn't be for sale!
