Why Not Support Marriage?

Keith Olbermann issued a special comment on the recent ban of gay marriage in California. Like Keith, I just can't figure out why anyone wants to limit another person's access to marriage and all it's benefits.

My latest post at my blog mentions a beautiful article by Frederica Matthews-Green who talks about how society sometimes arrives at supporting values that Christians may affirm. She uses the metaphor of a weather storm. And as an example refers to a rather good movie from the 1930's in which the heroine smokes, smokes dangerously in a haystack, the leading man is a drunk, a character recommends violence to women as appropriate therapy, etc. She says that the cultural weather has changed so that now society as a whole, and not just "Christians" accept these as unhealthy and in some sense wrong.

This gives me hope that one day our society as a whole will one day be able to resolve the issues of abortion and gay marriage and come to a near consensus. Of course, other problems will come up to replace these.

Mike L you and Keith are bleeding way to much on this issue. I must admit as he speeks through this video I feel a little like crying myself. I don't know why though. I believe it's the entire "Book of Love" thing. I get lost though when I think of such a thought provoking gentleman as Keith caring soooooooo much about Love. Love is between entities. It has nothing to do with documentation. Unfortunately he like other liberals change the question to sway the issue. A great debaters trick. I'm not deceived. These gay people just want better tax rates and a few societal perks that marriage between a man and a woman allows. It's their choice; too bad.

Let the voters decide. I think they have.At least in California and a few other states. Un fortunately the gay old folks won't be happy unless they get their way. I feel certain they'll persuade some judge of that. And when is it so wrong to throw a bunch of money in a particular direction to get your way politically. I'm damn glad Obama did it. If he hadn't where might we be now. Another issue I have with Keith; what about the people who want their names in this book of Love who have compassion and love for the unrecognized rights of the unborn in this country. That's millions of pages in this so called "book of Love". It's about time the left wing agenda speaks up for those that have no voice. And stop hiding behind it's the womans choice. That's B.S. The majority of abortions are nothing more than beaurocratic birth control.I guess all those bleeding heart mother's will somehow get into the book of Love about the same time Charlie Manson does. a killer is a killer. You mother's gotta make that choice.and please quit trying to get others to accept you perverted way of doing life. There is nothing natural about same sex anything. I can't see how that promotes our species. If anything it leads to a real warped sense of who you are.

Anonymous,

How is it their "choice"?

Here is the real issue... These people need social security and medicare when their spouse dies (just like us).

Anonymous,

You can't have it both ways. Do you want minorities to have a voice (like gay people) or not? Do you want a majority to simply vote away the rights of individuals or not?

As for abortion. It is a consistent position. Women should not have their right to choice squashed by government.

Hi mike, I stopped by via link. I have an issue with your last response. When you refer to gays as a minority (the same way blacks or Hispanics are minorities I assume)I believe you ore off base. Being gay is not just a matter of orientation but also of behavior. Those active in the gay community are because they have made the choice to engage in homosexual behavior. This is behavior which a large number of people consider to be immoral. You may not agree with them but you need to understand that many who voted for prop 8 were not motivated by hate but rather b a desire to take a stand against behavior they believe to be immoral. One has no choice as to their race or sex but one always has a choice regarding their behavior.

P & A,

Many people think smoking, drinking, or rejecting Jesus as Lord and Savior is immoral. We can't deny social security benefits and other rights to people who smoke or deny Jesus as Lord and Savior, can we? What if a group in majority decides that being Christian was immoral, should the government deny rights and privileges to Christians if the majority says so? I think that the constitution firmly prohibits such discrimination.

I know gay people who would give their right arm to be straight. Many, actually give their own genitalia in an attempt to be straight. Homosexuality is clearly NOT something they chose. I can't imagine anyone would do this if it was a choice.
